Lauderdale County School Board meets June 6
The Lauderdale County Board of Education
accomplished many things at its regular meeting on June 6. But,
despite of all the business that the school board members
completed, the meeting was recessed to wait on budget approval
from the County Commission..
At the meeting, Board members viewed the Celebrations 2005-2006
video put together as an end-of-the-year program for teachers
and faculty by Technology Coordinator Kate Grammer. Grammer will
retire at the end of June, with Ripley High School’s Shawn
Kimble moving to the Lauderdale County Schools Central Office to
take her place.
In the Superintendent’s Report, Jackson informed board members
that the central office had received an overall score of 4 on
its recently submitted TCSPP. A 4 is the highest score available
from the state for the system’s self-evaluation and five-year
plan.
The School Wellness Plan was approved after a presentation by
Kerri Carmack, with board members also approving the second
reading of the Energy Management Conservation Policy and the
Student Inspection and Correction Procedure.
Codes 2000 and 2390 of the board’s policy book were also
amended. These codes addressed the board’s beliefs and mission
statement, and added state contacts to its non-discrimination
policy.
The board asked Superintendent Phillip Jackson to create an
addition to the budget supporting a 12-month Ag Program after
hearing a presentation by Missy Hammond, Windy Willette, Kent
Cherry and Courtney Flood, who lead the Halls High School and
Ripley High School Ag departments. Board members also voted to
fund the Family Resource Center for one more year, pending
budget approval from the Lauderdale County Court.
Board members approved the Title I budget after a presentation
by Dr. Joan Hartman, and will plan to discuss creating a Youth
Advisory Council and a program that will rotate board members
through the Central Office in the future.
Jackson reported that the Ripley High School Step Team took
second in the recent Sisterhood Showcase at the Cook Convention
Center in Memphis and that he had received many positive
comments concerning Lauderdale Links. Lauderdale Links is a new
addition to the system’s website, with e-newsletter and hard
copy tabloid editions that help inform residents in the county
about what the school system is doing.
He also informed board members that the Harcourt Assessment
Program would like to begin a pilot program at Ripley Elementary
School and Lauderdale Middle School.
The meeting was recessed until members of the Lauderdale County
Commission could report back to them concerning the budget.
