Lauderdale School Board holds January meeting
The January meeting of the Lauderdale County Board of Education
was a productive one, with members electing a chairman,
appointing a textbook adoption committee and approving a budget
amendment for its new Consolidated School Health program.
At the meeting, board members voted to give the
gavel permanently to Eva Drain, who has been serving as interim
chairman of the board since September, with Austin Thompson
named as vice-chairman.
Elementary Supervisor Harriet Shelby and
Secondary/Vocational Supervisor Sue Toles presented the results
of the 2006 Report Card for the system with board members.
Policy and Procedures and consistent enforcement were discussed,
as well.
In his report, Superintendent Phillip Jackson
shared information concerning an upcoming SCOPE conference where
students in the system learn about school boards and how they
work through various issues. Jackson suggested that the system
send one junior from each high school to the conference and
allow that student to serve as an advisor to the board during
his or her senior year, giving board members a unique
perspective on concerns and views of the student body.
The system’s non-smoking policy was strengthened,
with discussion on increasing drug dog use within the schools
also visited. The role board members may take outside the board
meeting was discussed, as well.
Policy Codes 7000 through 7150 were also reviewed
with no changes.
