School Board approves 2007-08
school calendar
Members of the Lauderdale County Board of
Education recently approved the calendar for the 2007-2008
school year and endorsed a request to participate in the Keep
Tennessee Beautiful project that encourages each school in the
system to participate in a project that promotes activities like
clean-up, recycling and planting trees.
Superintendent Phillip Jackson proposed
improvements to several buildings in the system, including
renovations to the Jon Pavletic Physical Education building at
Ripley High School, replacing windows and carpet with tile in
other areas at RHS, and replacing the carpet in several areas at
Halls High School. Jackson will present the request for the
renovations to the County Commission at its next meeting.
Jackson recognized RPS for gaining a good report
on its SACS recertification, the LMS Lady Tigers basketball team
for competing in the state tournament, and reminded board
members of the upcoming Career Expo, to be held at the beginning
of March.
The board also passed a modification that
further restricts the use of tobacco in schools in the system.
The amendment to Code 2410 now prohibits smoking inside any
school building or within a 50-foot perimeter of the structure.
The code addresses federal and state laws that are within the
criminal code.
Board members discussed Code 2420 concerning
personal communication devices for students within the school
system and held a first reading of the policy as it stands. The
representatives elected to wait until the March meeting to
change the wording of the policy, and will hold a second reading
of the code at that time.
Also at the meeting, the Board voted to add
funds to the next budget to purchase each board member a Legal
Reference Manual put out by the Tennessee School Board
Association. Board members also heard a presentation by Food
Services Director Kerrie Carmack recommending changes in the
salaries for food service employees beginning in the next budget
cycle. No action was taken on Carmack’s proposal. Codes
7160-7600 were reviewed, as well, with no changes made.
