Lauderdale County School Board approves budget

The Lauderdale County School Board reconvened its June 6 meeting at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 13, for the purpose of adjourning it. The board had recessed the meeting to wait on the approval of its 2006-2007 Budget by the Lauderdale County Commission.

The Board then called to order the July 13 meeting, approved its agenda, the second reading of the School Wellness Plan (Code 2440) and the 2006-2007 System Budget.

Board members also heard from John “Willie” Harrell III on the subject of obtaining three years of his child’s daily grades from Ripley High School and discussed the best way to distribute the information to Harrell without invading the privacy issues of the other students.

The faculty of Lauderdale Middle School addressed the board on changes they are making in the school’s discipline code. One of those changes was a proposed “Dress For Success” policy that will establish additional restrictions on the board’s current dress code for Lauderdale Middle School students. The school has also created a more consistent policy on enforcing the dress code and will implement additional policies to engage and encourage students to participate in school activities.

Board members set a called meeting for 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, July 25, to discuss the proposal further and vote on whether to allow LMS staff to implement the Dress for Success policy. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at Ripley Elementary School.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Phillip Jackson informed board members on personnel changes in the District Office and among the administrative staff of several of the schools. He also reported on a new teacher orientation and an upcoming training program on school safety and bullying.

Two Pre-K classes will be added to the system this year, with Halls Elementary School and Ripley Primary School each gaining a class.

Items for future agenda included year-end updates on all booster club financial reports for the school system.

Codes 6100 through 6243 of the policy book were reviewed by board members and amended to reflect the current policies and procedures of the department.
