State Report Card: Lauderdale County Schools The
Tennessee state report card released on Tuesday, November 3,
2009, showed mixed results for Lauderdale County Schools.
Tennessee education officials have recently imposed tougher
standards changing the way they calculate achievement scores.
However, Lauderdale County Schools showed equal or above
academic growth compared to the state. The district scored a B
in reading/language arts and a C in math, social studies, and
science in value-added assessments compared to the state’s all
Cs. Value-added assessments gauge how much a student has
learned from year to year. “The state’s report card indicates
some positive trends in the district, but it also tells us that
we have room for improvement,” Superintendent Joey Hassell
stated. “When looking at individual schools, some fared better
and some worse than the district and state grades. It is
apparent that our students are not where they need to be; but
it’s good to see that the data shows we are progressing toward
where they should be, ” he stated. In the area of academic
achievement, Lauderdale County Schools scored two Cs in
Reading/Language Arts and Science as well as two Ds in Math and
Social Studies. The state performance was Bs in all four-subject
areas.
Lauderdale County improved its graduation rate to 82.9percent
compared to the state’s graduation rate of 82.2 percent. This
data shows an improvement compared to the districts graduation
rate of 77.1 percent in 2007 and 77.5 percent in 2008.
In review of high school performance in seven academic areas,
Lauderdale County performed above performance expectations in
two areas, at performance expectations in 3 areas, and below
performance expectations in 2 areas.
The Tennessee Department of Education recently changed the
way they compute achievement scores for schools and the scales
used to determine letter grades as a result of the
implementation of tougher curriculum standards this year. It’s
part of the Tennessee Diploma Project to align state curriculum
to national standards.
