Superintendent’s Message #6
October 16, 2009
As
a school superintendent, I frequently use the words
accountability, excellence, expectations, respect, and
trust. For everyone in our county, these words bring to mind
thoughts of the past, emotions of the present, and hopes for
the future. These words create boundaries for appropriate
adult behavior and student conduct. Specifically, what we
teach, perhaps more from each other than from a textbook, is
what our students will learn. What children learn is what
they will practice.
Throughout educational research, it is noted that successful
school districts and high performing schools build positive
relationships with students and their families, maintain
high expectations for ALL students, and provide necessary
support when students do not meet expectations.
Veteran coach, Lou Holtz, once stated, “Ability is what you
are capable of doing, Motivation determines what you do,
Attitude determines how well you do it.”
Please remember that our thoughts, words, and actions will
create our school district, individual schools, and our
county. It is the charge of the Lauderdale County School
System to meet mandated educational benchmarks while keeping
a true focus on the individual needs of all students.
As stated in Lee J. Colan’s “Orchestrating Attitude,”
getting the best from yourself and others all starts with
one: one thought … one word … one action.
With motivation and the right attitude, I believe that
Lauderdale County Schools can be an excellent school
district for ALL students. Let’s ALL be the best that we can
be!
Joey Hassell, Superintendent
Lauderdale County Schools
