Hungry to write

Second grade students at Ripley Primary
School, top photo, and fifth grade students at Halls Elementary
School, bottom photo, are pictured during their daily writing
practice. These writers will join with all students in
kindergarten through eighth grade on January17 to participate in
a county-wide writing initiative. The best example from each
class will be compiled in a portfolio to represent the county
and keep track of progress made throughout the year. The RPS
motto? “We only write on days we eat!”

Students in both Halls and Ripley are looking forward to
participating in a county-wide writing practice on January 17.
On that day, all students in kindergarten through eighth grade
will write on the same topic to emphasize the importance of
composition on every grade level.
Each homeroom teacher will select the class’s best writing
sample and the winner will be included in a portfolio
representing the county-wide initiative.
The writing practice is a project of a writing committee
developed in November to focus on the writing standards and
rubrics of student writing curriculum and to bring consistency
to the writing programs across the system.
Lauderdale County Board of Education Instructional and Materials
Supervisor Phillis Barlow is in charge of the committee.
Each grade level will adhere to its own criteria, with first
through fifth grades focusing on narrative writing and sixth
through eighth grades trying their hand at expository writing.
High school classes will also be involved in the initiative.
“Teachers should give at least one essay each week in the
content areas,” said Barlow. “Students should be writing on all
grade levels.”
The January 17 practice will tie into the system-wide writing
assessment that will take place on February 6.
