Children enjoy a visit from Old St. Nick

Students at Ripley Primary School were
treated to a visit from Old St. Nick before the school system’s
recent winter break. Students on the red wing shared a breakfast
of juice and donuts with Santa, and then invited him close to
the hearth, where he learned what was on each student’s list and
posed for photos with them.
Kindergarteners present “The Colors of
Christmas”

Kindergarten students at Ripley Primary School recently
presented a play to deliver a little holiday spirit. Ms. Brenda
Harrell and Ms. Ernestine Henderson’s classes performed “The
Colors of Christmas,” sending wishes of a Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year out to friends and family just before Christmas
break.
RPS students ‘deck the walls’ at local nursing
home

Students in Mrs. Pam Langley’s kindergarten
class at Ripley Primary School recently “decked the walls” of
the Lauderdale County Community Living Center with handmade
Christmas wreaths. The students were asked to donate their
artwork by Christopher Henderson to bring a touch of holiday
spirit to residents at the center.
RPS kindergartners visit
Neverland

Kindergarten students on the blue wing at Ripley Primary School
recently visited Neverland during a field trip to the Orpheum
Theatre. The classes wore their holiday shirts to the see the
play, “Peter Pan.” Mrs. Pam Langley’s class is pictured sporting
their Peter Pan shirts, made by Phillip’s Designs of Halls.
A shoebox full of love
Students participate in Operation Christmas Child

Students in Mrs. Deanna Pavletic’s first-grade class at Ripley
Primary School recently sent seven shoeboxes filled with
presents to children around the world through the Operation
Christmas Child program sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, a
ministry of Franklin Graham. The students learned about sharing
through the program, which makes sure children in need all over
the world receive Christmas presents and a gift of love this
holiday season.
Students decorate doors for Red Ribbon Week
These award-winning doors were just one of the
many activities RPS students participated in during Red Ribbon
Week. Classes that won the door contest in each grade were
treated to a pizza party.
Students at Ripley Primary School recently participated in many
activities to promote Red Ribbon Week. During the week, the
school adopted the motto, “I’ve got better things to do than
drugs.”
A door display contest was included in the events with one
winning class from each grade receiving a pizza party. Slogans
in the door contest included “Don’t Get Caught in the Web of
Drugs,” “Our Award-winning Students Have Better Things to do
Than Drugs,” “We Don’t Mummy with Drugs” and “Scaring People
about Drugs.”
Other events included Monday’s “I Pledge to Be Drug Free” day,
with students and faculty sporting patriotic colors and passing
out ribbons and safety pins; Tuesday’s “Drugs and I Don’t Mix,”
tacky day with mis-matched clothing; Wednesday’s “Together We
Make a Difference” red day; Thursday’s “Sock it to Drugs” day
featuring crazy socks; and Friday’s “Orange You Glad You Choose
to be Drug Free?” day, with Tennessee colors and logos featured.
RPS names “Most Recognized”

Ripley Primary School recently announced at an awards program
its Most Recognized kindergarten students for the first nine
weeks of the 2006-2007 school year. Among the activities in the
program was a presentation by several RPS cheerleaders.
Kindergartners who received the Good Character Award include
Kimberly Bailey, Ashley Burton, Zachary Rhodes, Hayley Vaughan,
Bethany Stever, Camryn Gray, Dimengo Rogers, Jasmine Braden,
Jalen Chandler, Dalton Goforth, Shan’Tia Crawford, Jay’Quon
Smith, Alex Midkiff, Seth Byrd, and Kailyn Buckner.
Kindergarten students recognized with Academic Awards were
Emmanuel Carney, Kameron Halliburton, Nyha Dixon, Jaqualin
Shawn, Blake Webster, Sabrina Milan, Brandon Hartsfield, Destiny
Pruitt, Rachel Jackson, Demetrius Moore, Mark Hayes, Chandler
Roberts, Bri Alston, Robeson Hendren, and Lily Kate Carmack.
Most Improved kindergarten students were Kelsi Tibbs, Nikya
Graves, Tajia Bonds, Ashley Cross, Marcus McCuller, Ajah
Washington, Cutter Rose, Ja’Mylian Deberry, Lance Simpson,
Charnice Richardson, Daniel Coughlan, Montavis Rogers, DAngela
Liggons, Dalon Lee, and Nate Greer.
First-grade students who received the Good Character Award
include Jason Wallace, Ashely Wilder, Taylor Yelverton, Kasey
Moore, Yasmine Taylor, Lamar Barbee, Elizabeth Warden, Karri

Thanksgiving Feast

Pilgrim and Indians join together for a Thanksgiving feast


RPS students view real Native Americans close up
Kindergarten and preschool students at Ripley Primary School
recently celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday and the end of
their units on the Mayflower, Pilgrims, Native Americans, and
the first Thanksgiving with many different activities.
As many as 160 students in the kindergarten classes of Carol
Davis, Shawna Moore, Kim Blackstock, Joan Sigman, Beth Simpson,
Joan Hill, Manisha Lazure, and Misti Henderson concluded their
unit on the first Thanksgiving with a feast of their own on the
floor of the Green Wing. Students made their own shirts, hats
and necklaces and dressed as Native Americans and Pilgrims to
celebrate the holiday and finish their unit.
Students in Jenny Riley’s Preschool and Brandi Hutchins and
Janice Bird’s kindergarten classes at Ripley Primary School
recently joined together for a Thanksgiving feast. The students
dressed as pilgrims and Indians and shared their lunch next to a
real teepee to conclude their study on the first Thanksgiving.
Students enjoyed a performance by real Native American Indians,
who live in Henning and shared their ceremonial clothing, dances
and other customs with the students in an up-close and personal
way.
Fabulous 50’s Friday

Kindergarteners on the Blue Wing recently had a sock-hop to good
old rock-and-roll in the gym to celebrate Fabulous 50’s Friday.
All enjoyed posing for a class picture behind the old cars of
the 50’s.

On their 58th day together, kindergarteners on
the Blue Wing at Ripley Primary School decided to celebrate
Fabulous 50’s Friday. Sporting poodle skirts, scarves, rolled-up
blue jeans, white T-shirts, and leather jackets, the students
enjoyed a sock-hop in the gym. Limbo and Hula-Hooping were also
enjoyed, as well as root beer floats at snack time.
Color coordinated


The Pre-K classes at Ripley
Primary School recently celebrated Color Day, a reward for the
culmination of two weeks spent studying colors. During the day,
each class rotated to another room to complete a color related
craft. Students frosted cookies, made snow cones, strung a
colored bead necklace, and created art by rolling a
paint-covered marble on paper. The event ran smoothly due to the
many parent volunteers who participated.
“Keep Your Eye on Amanda” teaches media
lessons


Students in Ms. Jenny Brandon's second-grade class have
become regular readers of the newspaper. They are following
“Keep Your Eye on Amanda” by Avi, which has been published as a
serial story in the Commercial Appeal each Tuesday and Thursday.
It is part of the Newspapers in Education program sponsored by
the International Paper Foundation.
Project L.E.A.D. T-shirts presented

Students who participated in the after-school program
sponsored by Project L.E.A.D. are offered after school classes
including reading, math and other various enrichment classes.
Students and teachers involved in the program were recently
presented special L.E.A.D. T-shirts.
Ripley Primary School students “Just say
no!”

Students in the after-school program at Ripley Primary School
recently received a visit from Miss Kathy Robinson of the
Lauderdale County Health Department. The second-grade students
were made aware of the harmful effects of drugs and the
importance of saying drug-free throughout their lives. The
program, sponsored by Project L.E.A.D., stresses health safety
and character education.
Fall Festival features autumn fun


Students on Ripley Primary School’s green wing recently
celebrated at their annual Fall/Farm Festival Day with a pumpkin
rolling contest, hayrides, sack race, and pony rides scheduled
throughout the day. Students in Mrs. Shawna Moore and Mrs. Beth
Simpson’s classes are pictured enjoying the fun activities of
the event.
Stop, drop and roll

Students in Ms. Jennifer Brandon's second-grade class were
visited by firemen Jeff Ogden and James Todd from the Ripley
Fire Department during Fire Prevention Month in October. The
fire department visited with all of the students at Ripley
Primary School to teach, emphasize, and remind all students of
important fire and safety tips. Students learned about smoke
detectors, fire trucks, and fire fighting gear, along with many
other important lessons.
