W.A.Y. Club honors veterans with luncheon

Members of the RHS W.A.Y. Club recently
honored veterans with a luncheon. Class members created
centerpieces out of pumpkins and rice bags, which were put into
the veterans’ gift bags to soothe aching muscles.

Members of the Ripley High School W.A.Y. Club and their sponsor,
Mrs. Peggy Roberson, honored local veterans with a lunch last
Thursday. The class treated current and past members of the
armed forces with a menu of delicious food as well as a gift bag
containing embroidered handkerchiefs and rice bags used to sooth
sore muscles.
Veterans honored at the luncheon included RHS faculty and staff,
family members of the staff that served, with honorary gift bags
presented, as well. A certificate of everlasting honor was also
presented to the family of Corporal Kevin Edgin, who gave his
life in Afghanistan during Operation Mountain Thrust.
Members of the club made the rice bags and table centerpieces,
with RHS teacher Jil Sutterer embroidering the handkerchiefs and
donating the use of her consumer science kitchen and classroom.
Sheila Kissell, Kirk Kissell, Tammy Whitley, and Roberson’s
daughter also assisted with the luncheon.
RHS welcomes new basketball coaches

The Ripley High School Boys Basketball team began its season in
November with a new coach taking the lead. Coach Blaine Mchaffey
joins the RHS staff from McNairy Central, where he reached three
straight region tournaments during his four years as head coach.

Members of the RHS 2006-2007 Freshman Boys Basketball team are
James Cohill, Mark Dillard, Jessee Deberry, Breyon Graves,
Jacoby Harris, Toney Kilpatrick, Quintin Lee, Trevor McGee,
Tristian Robinson, and LaRacco Winbush.
Coach Linda McKinnie leads the girls’ teams at RHS, taking the
place of Coach Shawn Kimble who became the system’s Technology
Coordinator last summer. McKinnie commands respect from the
players with her past honors as a player, with both her high
school and college alma maters retiring her jersey when she
graduated.
Coaches John Yarbrough and Gary Fain will also assist with the
team this season.
Members of the 2006-2007 Girls Basketball Team include Shalunda
Barbee, LaCortni Bonds, London Estis, Natasha Glass, Veronica
Harrell, Davmarius Hayes, Skye Hickey, Sylvette Lake, Ashley
Maben, Merceded Norfork, Danielle Richardson, Sha Richardson,

RHS FCCLA students attend leadership camp

Ripley High School FCCLA students recently attended leadership
camp in Doyle, Tennessee, with Advisor Jil Sutterer. Students
who participated met with FCCLA chapters from all over
Tennessee, attending various workshops and listening to
inspirational speakers. Leadership skills and teamwork were the
focus of the camp. RHS’s Travon Graves was one of six students
at the event chosen for a Camp Council position. Members who
attended included Trayvon Campbell, Ashunti Figgs, and Travon
Graves.
Sorority donates book to RHS Library

The Pi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Teacher’s
Sorority recently made a donation to the Ripley High School
Library for the purchase of a book to commemorate the events of
Sept. 11, 2001. Pictured, from left, are RHS librarians Diane

Band earns high marks in Bandmasters
Championship

Members of the Ripley High School Marching Band recently
traveled to Memphis to compete in the Bandmasters Championship
at the Liberty Bowl Stadium. The band was the only West
Tennessee band to place in the top three in Class A, taking
second place. In the Class A category, the group also won
Overall General Effect and Most Outstanding Color Guard.
Ripley High School Recently announced its
Honor Roll for the first nine weeks of the 2006-2007 school
year.
Students who maintained A’s and B’s on their report cards to

FCCLA sews up Mid-South Fair competitions

Members of Ripley High School’s Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America recently attended the Mid-South Fair,
competing and earning ribbons in several categories.
The group entered four categories in the Fashion Review and came
home with two first-place and Sweepstakes awards and two
third-place ribbons.
Trevon Graves entered the Suit category and won the sweepstakes
and first place in that category, with Precious Hennings winning
the sweepstakes and first place in the Sportswear category. Both
of their outfits will be displayed at the Mid-South Fair all
week.
LaTavia DeBerry won third place in the Casual category and
Ericka Robertson won third place in the After Five category.
RHS receives grant from Exxon

Ripley High School recently received a $500 grant from the
ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program. Donna Collum, manager
of Mega-Mart in Ripley, worked with school officials to secure
the grant, which is one of 4,000 available to schools across the
country. Collum is pictured presenting the check to RHS
Assistant Principal Joe Bridges.
RHS sends 10 students to 2006 All Northwest
Honor Choir
Several members of the Ripley High School Choral Department
joined students from 40 high schools in Northwest Tennessee at
Crockett County High School last Saturday for the annual
Northwest Tennessee High School Honor Choir auditions.
Only 240 students were chosen out of over 1,000 singers to
participate in the 2006 All Northwest Tennessee High School
Honor Choir.
At the audition, RHS’s Emily Herron was ranked second in
Northwest Tennessee in the first alto category, with Ginna
Cherry ranking third in the first soprano category.
Other RHS students who will participate in the choir include
first soprano, Crystal Jones; second sopranos, Rebecca
Houghtaling, Kelly Jones, and Chasity Ashmore; first alto,
Sabrina Edwards; second alto, Charli Henry; first tenor, Timothy
Springfield; and second tenor, James Barbee.
Honor Choir members will rehearse Nov. 9 and 10 in Jackson with
their public performance scheduled for Nov. 11.
