kind of fireworks

The Ripley High
School Army JROTC Rifle Team spent Independence Day
participating in the 2007 National Junior Olympic Three-Position
Air Rifle Championship in the team’s fifth straight year to
represent Tennessee in the national competition.
The event took
place in the Auxiliary Gym of Diddle Arena at Western Kentucky
University in Bowling Green, Ky. Ripley took 12th place in the
Sporter Scholastic Team Championship, shooting a score of 4029
collectively.
Students who
shot for the RHS team included Matthew Berkley with 1071,
Crystal Jackson earning 1006, Jordan McCalvin with 986 and
Ashley Rorie earning 966. Austin Rorie served as alternate for
the team, which was coached by Major Hugh T. Cook.
The team’s next
competition will take place August 8 through 12 in Fort Benning,
Ga.

School recently presented scholarship and award winners during
the school’s annual Senior Awards Night. RHS seniors earned
scholarships totaling over $350,000 for their college careers.

RHS earns
SACS accreditation
Ripley High School recently
completed its SACS accreditation from the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools.
“We had a lot of support from
the stake holders,” said RHS Principal Bobby Baker.
“The SACS accreditation
process validated the things we knew were working and provided
some challenges that we will address. In education, we must
always strive to get better.”
A Cinderella
story

Ripley High School recently
presented its spring play, “Cinderella,” in the Bank of Ripley
Performing Arts Theater. Members of the Purple Tomato Players
and the RHS Choir brought the endearing fairy tale to life,
complete with a wicked stepmother and ugly stepsisters. Members
of the choir will also participate in a trip to Disney World
this spring, where they will perform.
Cooper earns
bronze medal from DAR

The Fort
Prudhomme Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
recently awarded its annual JROTC medal to Cadet Major Brittany
Cooper. The medal was presented by chapter Regent Mary Hellen
Pugh.
The DAR JROTC
medal and campaign bar is awarded to student cadets of
outstanding ability and achievement in secondary school, junior
college, college or university ROTC programs of the Army, Navy,
Air Force and Marine Corps and the Naval Sea Cadets Units. A
student must have demonstrated qualities of dependability and
good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership
ability and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the
importance of JROTC training.
A bronze medal
is awarded each year by the DAR’s Fort Prudhomme Chapter to a
graduating senior in the Army Junior ROTC program at Ripley High
School. This was the ninth year that the medal had been
presented to a cadet from Ripley.
Cadet Major
Cooper is currently the Tiger Battalion Executive Officer and
has served as a squad member, squad leader, and company
executive officer. She has also been a member of the JROTC Drill
Team and Color Guard. Cadet Cooper will attend the University of
Memphis this fall.
Ripley Wins
State Air Rifle Championship

For the third
time in four years, the Ripley HS Army JROTC Air Rifle Team won
the annual State Air Rifle Championship. Thhe Tennessee Shooting
Sports Association sanctions this competition.
The team
traveled to Nashville to compete in the competition on April 28.
Ripley shot 2062, defeating the second-place team, David
Crockett HS Naval JROTC from Jonesborough by 20 points. Shooting
for Ripley was Matthew Berkley with a 547, Crystal Jackson with
a 514, Jordan McCalvin with a 504, and Ashley Rorie with a 497.
Ripley’s B team
came in 12th place. Shooting for the B team was Jasmine Shaw
with a 495, Austin Rorie with a 436, Jason Brown with a 426, and
Andrew Spoon with a 375.
The group will
compete again on July 4, when they represent Tennessee in the
National Junior Olympics at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
