Berkley
ranks first in state

The Ripley High
School JROTC Air Rifle Team was recently given the results of
the Tennessee State qualifier for the Three Position Air Rifle
National Junior Olympics. This competition qualified shooters
and teams to represent the state in the National Junior Olympics
held this summer.
In the
Individual Competition, Matthew Berkley came in first in the
state, shooting a 549. Other RHS shooters who placed statewide
included: sixth place, Crystal Jackson with a score of 513; 12th
place, Ashley Rorie shooting a 501; and placing 23rd and 24th in
the state were Jordan McCalvin and Jasmine Shaw, both shooting a
473.
In the team
competition, Ripley HS Army JROTC came in second, losing to
Craigmont by only six points. The Ripley team shot a 2036.
Irvin
presents to RHS students a Scottish serenade

 
Students at
Ripley High School were recently treated to a performance on the
bagpipes by Dan Irvin. Irvin discussed his Scottish background,
inventions created by residents of the nation and played
“Amazing Grace,” “Danny Boy” and “Scotland the Brave.” Irvin was
the guest of RHS teacher Ray Webb.
Berkley hits
the bullseye

RHS Army JROTC
Air Rifle Team Cadet Matthew Berkley recently hit the bullseye
in the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship at Fort Benning,
Georgia, winning second place in the U.S. Army and sixth place
overall.
The contest,
which decided the 2007 National JROTC champions, hosted 96
competitors representing the best 24 JROTC teams as well as 36
at-large individuals.
After the first
day of shooting, Matthew was in 12th place overall, shooting a
535. However on the second day, he came back strong shooting a
545. During the second day finals, he improved his position to
sixth overall and moved up four positions into the Army’s
second-place spot. This was the second JROTC national event in
which he has participated.
Ripley’s next competition will be the State Championship in
Nashville.
RHS Cadets
compete in drill contest

On Saturday,
March 10, the Ripley HS Army JROTC Drill Team traveled to New
Madrid, Missouri, to compete in a drill competition. Six schools
competed.
In the
different categories, Squad Without Arms, commanded by 2LT Robbi
Taylor, placed third. Squad and Platoon With Arms, commanded by
1LT Darrel Bishop, placed third. Exhibition Without Arms,
commanded by 1LT Leah Meyer, also placed third. Platoon Without
Arms, commanded by SFC Emily Hodson, placed second, and
Exhibition With Arms, commanded by 1LT Darrell Bishop, placed
second. Overall Ripley placed third.
