Sticky Science

Students in Mrs. Ungerecht’s fifth-grade science class at Ripley
Elementary School recently constructed plant and animal cells
using various “gooey” materials. This activity helped students
identify the different parts of the cells and review the
functions of each part. The students had a great time
participating in this “sticky” science activity.
New teachers join RES team

Seven new teachers have joined the Ripley Elementary School
staff this year. Pictured, from left, are Christina Dawson,
Heather Beckley, Allison Higgs, Leslie Carter, Elizabeth Jones,
Julie Kirkpatrick, and Kelly Penny. The educators are already
doing a wonderful job with their students and have received a
warm welcome from coworkers and school administration.
Blocking off time to improve reading

Third graders in Ms. Waldo’s reading class are pictured taking
advantage of Ripley Elementary School’s new 90-minute reading
block. The block will be used throughout the entire school in an
effort to improve students reading abilities.
Students enjoy end of summer treat

Students in Billie Kissell’s fourth-grade class at Ripley
Elementary School celebrated the first week of school with
“Watermelon Week.”
“We estimated the weight of the watermelon and amount of seeds
it contained,” said Kissell. “The students then actually weighed
the watermelon and counted the seeds to check their predictions.
They also made 3D pictures.”
As a part of the lesson, the students also studied the
development of the plant from a seed to a full size melon.
