Space Talk
If you had the opportunity, what questions would
you ask someone who has actually traveled into space?
Fourth-grade students in Sandra Thayer and Tressy Crutchfield’s
classes at Ripley Elementary School recently joined other
schools across the nation for an opportunity to ask those
questions in an online chat with former NASA astronaut Rich
Clifford. The opportunity was provided by Space Explorers, which
is funded by a grant that was given to the Lauderdale County
Schools by the Development and Advancement of Rural Education or
D.A.R.E.
RES announces Science Fair winners

Several RES students who recently
participated in the school’s science fair will go on to compete
in regional competition in March.
RES recently held its annual science fair, with 18 students
working for several months in preparation for the event. Those
who participated selected an experiment, performed it using the
steps of the scientific method and compiled their research. The
students then wrote an abstract that showed their data and
designed a board that presented the results of the experiment.
Judges of the event included Dr. Charles Bray and Dr. Paul
Palazolo, both of the University of Memphis, and Ray Cole of
Quebecor World in Covington.
Several of the winners will go on to compete in the West
Tennessee Regional Science Fair in Jackson, Tenn., to be held in
March.
