and exercise. The program also teaches healthy eating habits.
RES 5th graders use the Internet to search
for energy information

Ms. Jennifer Milan’s fifth-grade students played 20 questions
on the Internet searching for information about energy. This
scavenger hunt provided an opportunity for students to explore
energy, complete web-based research, and work on reading skills.
During the hunt, students learned about renewable and
nonrenewable resources, fossil fuels, environmental safety, and
engineering.

Miss Nancy Orgain.
Last year, RES students raised $7,279.77 for the
American Heart Association, setting an all-time record for their
school. This year, students will try to match that number by
collecting sponsors and donations for the Jump Rope for Heart
campaign. The students will jump rope in Physical Education
classes at RES throughout the month.
Keeping Tennessee Beautiful

Students at Ripley Elementary School have risen to a challenge
from the Lauderdale County Board of Education to participate in
the Keep Tennessee Beautiful project. Since receiving the
encouragement from the school board, Project L.E.A.D. students
at the school spent two afternoons picking up trash around the
RES campus. Other projects suggested by the program include
recycling and planting trees.
AR Pizza Party

RES Project L.E.A.D. students recently enjoyed pizza and cokes
for earning 100 percent of their AR points. Not only did the
students receive all of the AR points required within the nine
weeks period, they all received the points at least two weeks
before the end of the nine weeks.
Third Graders simulate space experiments

Third graders at Ripley Elementary School are enjoying the
school’s Orbital Lab, a project designed to simulate plants
growing in space. In the experiments, three different soils were
used by Ms. Diane Akin’s third-grade class to grow soybeans and
wheat. The lab had 15 hours of light and one group added
hydroponic powder dissolved in the water. A growth chart was
kept which shows definite differences in the growth patterns.
RES hosts math workshop for parents

Ripley Elementary School recently held a workshop
for families on fun ways to learn math facts. The event was led
by RES teachers Jill Carpenter and Vicky Elder. Many family
