Sharing a different kind of spirit

The cheerleading squad at Lauderdale Middle School recently decided to spread another kind of spirit by preparing boxes for Operation Christmas Child instead of participating in a gift exchange with each other. The students chose presents and prepared shoeboxes full of the Christmas spirit to be sent to underprivileged children around the world as a part of the program offered by the Franklin Graham ministry, Samaritan’s Purse.

Students in Mrs. Paula Brill’s seventh-grade classes look forward to her traditional Thanksgiving breakfast each year.

Mrs. Paula Brill recently held the annual Thanksgiving Breakfast that she has made for her seventh-grade students since the 1980’s. She decorates her room and tables with holiday items to make a festive site. It’s a tradition that she can’t seem to break, with her former students telling their younger siblings about the event. Each year, her “new” classes look forward to her Thanksgiving breakfast tradition.

With dirty hands and high spirits for a job well done, several students in Mrs. Ann Chipman’s science class at Lauderdale Middle School recently volunteered to create a beauty spot on the grounds of their school. Students participated in weeding, mulching, and planting pansies in the flowerbeds surrounding the school in the program that allowed them to get involved and show pride in their school’s appearance.

Amanda teaches several lessons

Students at Lauderdale Middle School are “Keeping their Eye on Amanda,” in a story published by the Commercial Appeal each week.

The story is a project sponsored by International Paper, which entertains the student with the tale of an adventurous raccoon who becomes a thief, introduces them to the newspaper media, and even gives them a chance to earn AR points when they have completed the last chapter.

Studying fossils and dinosaurs

Students in Kim Webb and Theresa Pennington's classrooms at Lauderdale
Middle School recently completed a study on fossils and dinosaurs.

During the unit, students created fossils using molds and plaster-of-Paris. Some examples of their work included trilobites, ammonites, dinosaur claws, and cave bear and shark teeth. The children were allowed to take their work home with them when the unit was completed.

The class’s next project was on safari hunting. Students participated in the unit’s kickoff by wearing hats and watching an interactive safari movie.

Snakes Alive!

Coach Randy White cozies up with a snake at the World of Reptiles program at LMS..

Students cheer “Go! Coach White!” while a Burmese python gives him a very friendly “hello.”

The Natural History Educational Company states that its “World of Reptiles” program is one of its most popular among students and sometimes one of its least popular among teachers, but Lauderdale Middle School Coach Randy White didn’t seem to have a problem cozying up to the exhibition when the program was recently presented to students in the LMS gym.

This year’s exhibit included South American bullfrogs, an alligator snapping turtle, Monitor, Pueblan milk snake and a very sweet-natured Burmese python.

While grabbing the attention of the students, as well as Coach White, the 50-minute program also addressed the natural history of the animals and the world geography behind their native habitats. Various aspects of the animals’ complex ecosystem were covered, as well as how that ecosystem enhances the interaction of the species.

Students turn library into bookstore

Students at Lauderdale Middle School have turned their library into a student-run bookstore complete with lessons on small business operations, debit card transactions, and real-world employment opportunities.

With the help of a Scholastic Teacherwide grant applied for by eighth-grade reading teacher Teresa Taylor, LMS students are running their very own bookstore. The grant covered the costs of all the start-up supplies for the in-school bookstore that currently employs five eighth-grade students.

“The thing that is really neat about this bookstore is that it is run entirely by the students,” said Taylor. “It is the responsibility of the employees to see that the bookstore is open on time every morning.”

The bookstore offers books that range in both readability and AR levels, with many different genres and titles available. Another unique feature of the store is that parents may purchase a pre-paid debit card for their child in any amount up to $100.

“This bookstore is teaching our eighth-grade students how to be responsible and successful in a small business operation,” said Taylor. “By working in the bookstore, the students are gaining real-world work experience.

The student-run bookstore is open each morning from 7:10 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. in the school library. Books are available for $3.50 each.

Bridging the generation gap

The Guidance Friendship Club at Lauderdale Middle School recently participated in a service project that involved interviewing a senior citizen.

Students visited Ripley Health and Rehabilitation Center, where they were paired with residents who shared what life was like two or more generations ago. The oldest resident that was able to give and interview was 101 years young.

The students learned valuable lessons and realized how different times have become since all those years ago. The residents felt a sense of pride in sharing their stories with students from LMS.

Intergenerational activities help two or more generations to cooperate, learn and share wisdom that can only be gained from life experiences.

LMS students are pictured with residents of Ripley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center who took part in the Intergenerational Service Project and the Guidance Friendship Club Sponsors.

Students put bad grades in Jeopardy

Seventh grade students in Mrs. Paula Brill’s math class recently treated their class work like a game show with a Jeopardy-style competition in the classroom. The students reviewed integers with this unique activity.
