Lady Tigers finish second, begin tournament play

The Lauderdale Middle School Lady Tigers basketball team finished its regular season in second place and opened tournament play with a win over Fayette East. The team then advanced to the finals by defeating Haywood.

LMS names top readers

Lauderdale Middle School recently congratulated its top Accelerated Readers for the second term of the 2006-2007 school year. Readers who earned the most points for their hard work and love of reading included Brittaney Gray, T.J. Crutchfield, William Barnett, Tamera Lee, Jacquae DeBerry, Everett Hutcherson, Mara Payment, Quiane Roby, Jasper Winbush and Nathan Colvin.

Sing a song about science

LMS students in Ms. Kim Webb’s science class are currently studying the solar system. Along with other activities, the class learned a song to help them remember the names of the planets, their rotations, revolution schedules and the order they appear in from the sun. The students shared the song, which also distinguished the inner planets from the outer planets, with each of the school’s administrators in the front foyer of the school.

As a part of the unit, students recently completed one-page essays on surviving in space. In the paper, the students were traveling to Pluto and had to make an emergency stop. Which planet did they choose and why? What did they do to save themselves? Students were also required to choose a planet, draw it and list facts about it for display on the wall in the hallway.

To complete the unit, the students will create comets in the classroom.

LMS students move FastForword

Eighth grade students at Lauderdale Middle School recently completed seven weeks in the FastForword lab. The students did extremely well in the program, and leading achievers won prizes daily and weekly. At the close of the session, over half of each class graduated into the Literacy Advanced program, and several tested at 70 percent and above. A boy and girl in each of the five classes received a prize at the end of the seven weeks. Winners included Brooklyn Williams and Joseph Cunningham, Laura Mueller and Jacob Watkins, Aonetta Barber and Jwane Craig, Miesha Whitelow and Cadarrius Norfolk, Sierra Brown and Anfernee Smith.

Sixth-grade students just began their time in the lab, and teachers are expecting the same great results.
