Balloon sale aids classmates

Students at Halls Junior High School recently discovered a wonderful way to send love notes with a Valentine’s Day fundraiser to help two fellow seventh graders who are facing serious medical issues. A problem that now hits close to home, students in the school are much more aware of the need to support area hospitals. Approximately 200 balloons were sold in the fundraiser, earning over $300 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and LeBonheur Medical Center, where their classmates are receiving treatment. Additional fundraisers will be held in the very near future to aid the families of the students and the hospitals that provide their care.

Eighth graders prepare for high school registration

Cutline: Eighth grade students at Halls Junior High School are pictured taking the Kuder test, a new program that broadens career development for students preparing to begin their high school careers. The innovative program has been implemented system-wide this year.

Eighth-grade students at Halls Junior High School are busy preparing for high school registration, a process that this year will implement the The Kuder Career Planning program.

A comprehensive process, the program assists students and their families to make important decisions concerning their high school careers. Events include presentations from the high school guidance department on freshman course selections, placement recommendations, completion of the Kuder test, and a family meeting with high school personnel.

“This inventory is divided into three parts to better aid a student in making appropriate selections for high school course work,” said HJH eighth grade English teacher Jean Criner. “This process is multifaceted and all encompassing (for the students.)”

The first segment of the process categorizes the student’s interest assessment into seven career clusters and identifies them in descending order of interest. The second uses a skills assessment test to help the student understand their skill levels and guide them through another phase of the career exploration process. A third component offers an inventory of work values reflecting the characteristics of occupations that are likely to contribute to career satisfaction.

“Each students receives printed feedback,” said Criner. “And can access this information on line as he be begins the integral step towards his future destination.”
