HJH honors Duke Scholars

Since 1992, Halls Junior High School has been
recognizing seventh-grade students who qualify for the Annual
Scholastic Talent Search sponsored by the Duke University Talent
Identification Program.
The students, known as “Duke Scholars,” are
selected based upon a score in the top three percent of national
age-grade norms on selected Terra Nova subtests. Duke’s TIP
describes itself as “a nonprofit educational organization
established with the premise that the future of this nation
depends upon the fullest development of our best intellectual
resources.” Program objectives include identifying the very
bright at an early age and facilitating the education of these
students.
Seventh-graders who are honored as Duke Scholars
have the opportunity to take the ACT college entrance exam
alongside high school juniors and seniors. They participate
under regular testing conditions and may qualify for state and
national honors.
This year HJH announced 10 Duke Scholars: Sara
Bing, Caitlyn Brooke Binkley, Carllee Brown, Shamori Gooch,
Marqueston Hall, Robert Hill, Chris Jenkins, Kailyn Manness,
Melissa Shapiro, and Rachel Stone.
Baskets of Blessings

Students at Halls Junior High School have completed another
fundraiser to aid two classmates who are struggling with medical
problems. Using an Easter theme, students and faculty at the
school donated items and created baskets that were sold through
a silent auction to earn over $1,500. The money will benefit St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur to help the
families of their friends with medical expenses.
