Cheerleading …

The school’s football cheerleaders have already begun to raise the spirits of the Friday night crowds and the players on the team, and have also encouraged little ones, who long to be in their shoes, with its annual cheerleading camp.

Halls Tigers look to the goal line

The Halls Tigers got their first win of the season recently, beating Middleton, 32-21. Demarcus Patrick led the way with 148 yards rushing, 75 yards receiving and four touchdowns in the game.

Halls is now 1-2 on the season with losses to state powerhouse Jo Byrns and Gibson County.

Halls has gotten strong play in the early going from Tahj Barlow and Stephen Cowart, as well as quarterbacks Craig Davis and Leamond Arthur.

After a tough region contest against Trenton, the Tigers will move back into region play on Sept. 15 against Trinity Christian.

Golden Tigers rock and roll with “Movin’ Out”

The Halls High School Golden Tigers Marching Band is moving up with this season’s half-time production, “Movin’ Out.”

There’s no doubt that the feet of the audience will be moving, as well, with a show that is based on the music of Billy Joel, a popular rock-and-roll musician who has recently expanded into new genres of music.

“I’ve always been a fan of Billy Joel,” said Halls High School Band Director Nick Wooster. “He’s very musically talented and he’s recently written some classical albums.”

“Moving Out,” based on the Broadway show, seemed to be an ideal project for Wooster to implement for the 30 students who make up the marching Golden Tigers and its Color Guard.

“When you do something for marching band, you want to something that’s a production,” said Wooster. “I think ‘Movin’ Out’ is perfect for that. You can use the rock-and-roll music as well as the new stuff.”

The show will begin with “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and the title song, before it features additional hits like “Pressure” and “River of Dreams.” A reprise of the opening song will also be featured in the finale.

“We’ll go back to the beginning to close it all out,” said Wooster. “The kids are really enjoying it. Some of them actually know who Billy Joel is.”

Trading places …

HHS Head Football Coach Chris Hurt explains his teaching techniques and requirements to parents of the students in his Wellness class at the school’s open house in August.

Parents of Halls High School students recently traded places with their children for the school’s annual Open House.

Families gathered in the cafeteria, where they registered for door prizes and picked up their student’s schedule and a map of the school. Refreshments were offered as Principal Andy Pugh welcomed the parents and teachers mingled with the families of the students in their classes.

Parents of Halls High School students recently were able to trade places with their children at the school’s open house.

At the sound of the bell, parents followed in their children’s footsteps as they visited classrooms and learned about the teachers’ expectations and instruction techniques first hand.

During third block, Assistant Principal Jimmy Meeks announced the winners of the door prizes. Parents were awarded gift baskets, season basketball and football tickets and a television set.

Students can earn dual credit

These students in Mrs. Gara Strong’s College English Class at Halls High School are pictured taking advantage of a Dual Credit System recently offered by the school system in conjunction with the University of Martin-Ripley Center. There are currently 32 students at HHS taking advantage of dual credit courses in English and math. "Dual credit courses are such a golden opportunity for our academically advanced students as well as for their parents,” said Strong. “It's a unique transition in which the students can become acclimated to the depth and degree of study that college courses require before they actually set foot on campus.” See full story on Duel Credit on Ripley High School page.

Students attend leadership conference

Eight members of the Halls High School FFA program recently joined students from across the nation to attend the 2006 Washington Leadership Conference in the nation’s capital.

The week-long program helps FFA members improve their leadership skills and prepare for leadership roles in their chapters, communities and future careers. In addition to attending workshop sessions on persuasive communication, character leadership, building relationships, and discussions on citizenship, the students took part in service learning events. They also toured many historic sites in the city, including the Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt memorials, and the offices of their local congressman and senator.

“Tomorrow’s leaders must develop skills in these areas to effectively compete,” said National FFA Advisor and Coordinator, Agriculture and Rural Education Dr. Larry Case with the U.S. Department of Education. “Every students leaves WLC with an advantage because it gives those young people cutting-edge leadership skills and valuable insight for productive citizenship.”

Students who attended the conference included Carley Cherry, Kelly Crook, Holly Crook, Charlie Hammond, Chad Hardy, Kristin Hinton, and Hillary Steelman.

Students expand HHS water garden

Members of the Halls High School Fall and Spring Ag II classes recently did some work to improve the school’s water garden. Students worked to make the pond bigger with additional water flow. The sod removed from the area was placed near the gym entrance.
