Halls High 2006 Blue Ribbon School

HHS Principal Andy Pugh looks at
the school's Blue Ribbon criteria
with Amanda Lane, who was in charge of the application for the
program.
Halls High
School has been nominated as one of six schools in the state to
receive the 2006 Blue Ribbon School Award, a program established
under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation to reward
high-performing schools. Each school nominated has scored in the
top 10 percent on state tests for reading and math for the past
three years.
“I am pleased to announce that Halls High School has been
selected for the competition,” said Superintendent of Lauderdale
County Schools Phillip Jackson. “We will support the school in
every way as they pursue this high honor.”
Among the 2006 Blue Ribbon School nominees, HHS is considered a
Category 1 school, a group including schools that score in the
top 10 percent of the state that have at least 40 percent of its
students ranking economically disadvantaged.
Other schools nominated in the Category I class include Franklin
Elementary School in the Williamson County School System,
Hampton High School in the Carter County School System, and
Monterey High School in the Putnam County School System.
Schools nominated in Category 2 include those that have scored
in the top 10 percent of the state, including Holloway High
School in the Rutherford County School System, and Brentwood
Middle School in the Williamson County School System.
The program requires that one-third of the schools nominated
serve at least 40 percent disadvantaged students.
The State Department of Education notified nominees last
November that they had met the eligibility requirements to apply
for national recognition. The U.S. Secretary of Education will
announce the 2006 awardees in September, and a ceremony for the
schools will follow in Washington, D.C.
HHS baseball team ends season with 22-11
record

The Halls High School baseball team recently completed its
season with a 22-11 record and entry into district tournament as
the number one seed.
The team’s regular season finale provided several memorable
moments and provided a big boost to help the Tigers in
post-season play.
In their last regular game, Halls beat Greenfield 12-0. Tiger
seniors were honored for their efforts, with Zach Webb picking
up a key hit to highlight an impressive offensive attack, and
Colin Clendenin stealing the show by pitching a no-hitter.
Junior Josh Daniels returned from an injury to hit a grand slam
home run, and provided an additional spark to his teammates.
“We had a good game to finish the regular season,” said Halls
baseball Coach Mike
Blackwood.
The team fell to Humboldt in an elimination game of the district
tournament, but Blackwood said that the seniors on the team have
much to be proud of in their high school careers. Chaseton Dudas,
Daniels, Josh McBroom, Stephen Taylor, Colin Clendenin, and Zach
Webb were all key parts to last year’s team, which advanced to
the state tournament. The group also took part in three
sub-state games.
“I hate that it ended that way for the seniors, because the
expectations were extremely high,” said Blackwood. “You always
hope to go out as high as you can in your senior year, but this
group has a lot to be proud of.”
Wal-Mart gives HHS FFA a greenhouse
Members
of the Halls High School FFA recently joined with
representatives of Wal-Mart to hold a ribbon cutting for the
school’s new greenhouse.
The new structure was donated to the FFA department by
Wal-Mart, and needed to be moved from the store’s property to
the campus in just a few short days to accommodate the club’s
spring plants, which were due to arrive any day.
FFA members had to tear down the old greenhouse, which had
been built out of the old school bleachers, remove a tree, and
reconstruct the new building on the campus before the 3,800
plants arrived without a home.
According to FFA Advisor Missy Hammond, who was out of town
when the greenhouse became available, many individuals were
instrumental in making the project a success. Halls Mayor Trent
McManus, Public Works Director Alan Cherry, Ed Hunt and trustees
of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, and Carl Newman
all provided help to the club, with Hammond, assistant FFA
advisor Windy Willette, and members of the FFA and Ag
departments working long hours to complete the transition.
The greenhouse is now in place and open for business.

Halls softball girls win
district tourney

The Halls High School Softball team
recently came away from its district tournament with another
championship.
The Lady Tigers lost to South Fulton, 8-7, in the final round of
the winners’ bracket before winning three games, including two
more against South Fulton to storm the title.
“We were playing well,” Halls Coach Joey Tetleton said. “We
rallied to come back and win the district championship. We were
hitting the ball fairly well.”
Players for the Lady Tigers include Jessica Milner, Heather
Hill, Ashley Buckner, Sally Jo Turner, Kimberly Blackwood, Anna
Claire Hartman, Christi Meeks, Colby Smith, Crystal Lopp, Sarah
Hargett, Crystal Belew, Kelly Crook, Holly Crook, and Staci
Frazier.
Tetleton and Assistant Coach Molly Meeks went on to coach the
team in the regional semi-final tournament, where they fell to
McKenzie, 6-0.
“We came out a little flat on Monday in the Regional,” said
Tetleton. “But, we finished the season strong.”
HHS Bike-a-thon benefits
St. Jude

Halls High School students in the DECA Club and
Mrs. Gara Strong’s 11th grade English class recently sponsored a
Bike-a-Thon at Halls Elementary School to benefit St. Jude
Research Hospital.
Children collected flat contributions or
donations by the mile or lap, with prizes furnished by St. Jude.
Children on bicycles, mothers with strollers, and residents who
just wanted to walk for the cause joined together to participate
in the fundraiser.
Halls tennis duo wins
district title
The Halls High School doubles tennis team
of seniors Caitlyn Hurt and Sarah Beth Warren won the district
championship with a win over a team from Madison Magnet.
With the win, the duo advanced to the regional tournament, where
they gained a forfeit victory from a team from Booker T.
Washington.
The girls faced the Madison Magnet team for a rematch for the
regional championship, and would have advanced to the state
tournament if they had not been defeated in their second match
against the team.
