the Great” with the students. After the story, “Nate” was given
a Community Service award. The kids loved the story and Nathan.
HES students use laptops to reach for the
stars

Students in Tracie Taylor’s first grade class
at Halls Elementary School are busy studying the solar system.
Using lap top computers, the students turned their classroom
into a computer lab and were able to research information on the
solar system and the other planets that are a part of it.
Animal House

Students in Mrs. Lee Ann Harrison’s third-grade class at Halls
Elementary School recently collected supplies and treats for the
animals housed at the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter. The
shelter is undergoing reorganization and improvements by
officials in the county. In the lesson, students learned the
importance of community service, animal rights and taking care
of less fortunate creatures. A trip to the facility also allowed
them to receive a heartfelt “thank you” from the animals they
aided.
Family Read Night

Third- and fourth-grade students at Halls Elementary School
recently participated in the school’s second Accelerated Reader
Family Night at the school. Students who participated were
accompanied by their parents to the HES library, where they
enjoyed reading AR books and took advantage of available AR
tests. Organizers were very pleased with the turn out and look
forward to more events in the future.
Symbols of America

How many Statues of Liberty exist in the world
today? Who created the first American flag and how many stars
were sewn on it? Why was the eagle chosen as a symbol for the
United States? And how did the Liberty Bell receive its famous
crack?
Students in Mrs. Traci Taylor’s first-grade class
at Halls Elementary School recently learned the answers to all
these questions and many more when they completed a unit
concerning national symbols and heroes. As a part of the lesson,
classmates studied our nation’s many symbols and the
significance of each one, learning important facts and the
symbolism for each.
The students were then asked to be creative and
to choose a symbol with which they could craft a project that
included at least one important fact concerning the symbols.
Many varieties were turned in, including a T-shirt representing
all the national symbols, a Liberty Bell made out of aluminum
foil and a 3-dimensional Statue of Liberty. Each student that
participated received a homework pass.
