HES students camp out in class

Students in Mrs. Beth Meeks and Mrs. Tracie Taylor’s first
grade classes at Halls Elementary School recently completed a
unit on camping.
After spending a week reading about the activity, the
students spent a day “camping” in their classrooms.
Activities included going on a hike to the playground,
collecting sticks and twigs, and creating a pretend campfire
with Christmas lights inside their room. The students also made
S’mores, sang songs, and wrote and recited stories while sitting
around the campfire.
HES helps tornado victims

Students and Faculty at Halls Elementary School recently wore
their blue jeans to aid the tornado victims of Dyer County.
HES Principal Pat Carmack allowed teachers and staff members
to wear their blue jeans on the last five Fridays of the school
year in exchange for creating a fund to aid Dyer County’s recent
tornado victims. Many students also participated in the
fundraiser, with the school collecting over $400 to benefit the
relief efforts.
HES students become “Young Authors”
Halls Elementary School recently held its annual Young
Author’s Day, with each student in the school writing, editing,
illustrating, and “publishing” their own book in hard back form.
At the program, students were treated to hearing stories from
students, teachers, and local children’s book author Joan
Hartman, who will be retiring from her position as Supervisor
for Federal Programs for the Lauderdale County Board of
Education this summer.
“It was at a Young Author’s Day, here, in this school, that
my book was born,” Hartman told the children. “You have the
opportunity of being encouraged to read and write that we didn’t
have when I was in school.”
Hartman shared her story, “Sam’s Special Cookie,” with the
students. She produced the colorful picture book with a local
illustrator through her own publishing company, Hartbeat Books.
Three students also shared their Young Author’s Day books at
the program.
Other activities throughout the day included visits by Ozzie the
Owl from the Bank of Ripley, musical selections from HES music
teacher and local pianist Billy Kelly, a performance by Halls
band members, a puppet show presented by Forked Deer Regional
Library, and a Mother’s Day project with the Halls High School
FFA at the organization’s new greenhouse.
Tennessee Titans roll through …

Halls Elementary students were recently treated to a visit by
the Tennessee Titans Caravan. The program was geared to students
in the second through fourth grades, with representatives and
players from the NFL team promoting healthy lifestyles,
exercise, and making school a priority.
Students received Titan Caravan books and visited with the
players and the team mascot. A group of first graders had
another treat when they ran into a player on their way back from
lunch, and he gave them his autograph.
