Reaching for the summit
Superintendent of Lauderdale County Schools Phillip Jackson
recently led a group of middle school administrators to the
Tennessee Middle Grades Summit at Ravenwood High School in
Brentwood, Tennessee.
Under the theme “Creating a Culture of Learning,” participants
were treated to presentations from nationally-known speakers Dr.
Rick Wormeli, Dr. Cynthia Schmeiser and Dr. Pat Cooper.
Wormeli spoke on the unique nature of the young adolescent, with
Dr. Pat Cooper making a presentation on coordinated school
health and its impact on academics, and Schmeiser addressing the
impact of literacy on high school, college and work readiness.
In addition to the outstanding speakers, middle schools from
across Tennessee presented best practices from their respective
middle schools in breakout workshops. There were about 45 of
these sessions from which to choose.
Representing Lauderdale County with Mr. Jackson were Lauderdale
Middle School Principal Ron Bales, Halls Junior High Principal
Ned Lewis and LMS Assistant Principals Dennis Strayhorn and
Cathy Glover. The team came away from the conference anxious to
get back and share some of the ideas with their teachers and
staff, according to Superintendent Jackson.
