Principal: Pennye Deal Thurmond (pthurmond@mail.lced.net)

Pennye Deal Thurmond was chosen to lead the Ripley Elementary School’s administrative team at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year. A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Thurmond has completed her Master’s and Education Specialist degree at Nova Southeastern University with a focus on educational administration and supervision, as well as curriculum and instruction. Thurmond served Lauderdale County as a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Lauderdale Middle School in the 2000-2001 school year. She served two years as assistant principal at Union City Elementary School in Union City, and taught eighth-grade history and science at Dyersburg Middle School.

Assistant Principal: Lynn Ferrell (lferrell@mail.lced.net)

Lynn Ferrell was chosen as Assistant Principal of Ripley Elementary School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year. A 1972 graduate of Millington Central High School, Ferrell earned an Associate Degree from Shelby State Community College in 1975, and then earned his B.A. and M.A. from Memphis State. He also attended Travecca-Nazarene, completing coursework for licensing in administration and supervision. He is married to Sheila Ferrell, and the couple has two children, Walker Ferrell and Gracie Ferrell.

Rhonda Waldo has been employed by the Lauderdale County School System
since 1998, teaching third grade at Ripley Elementary for 10 years before earning the position of Curriculum Coordinator. She earned her Associate Degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Union University.

 

 

Cookie Dough fundraiser brings technology to the classroom

Ripley Elementary School recently held its annual cookie dough fundraiser, raising nearly $12,000. The money was used to purchase 24 in-focus projectors to be used in classrooms. Along with other prizes, big prize winners earned a limousine ride and an ice cream Sunday. The grand prize winner, fourth grader Rebekah Ennis, became “Principal of the Day.” She is pictured with RES Principal Pennye Thurmond.


RES Cook Off yields Golden Rolling Pin

Ripley Elementary School recently held its first annual RES Cook Off, with staff members making their favorite dishes and bringing copies of the recipes to share with their fellow employees.

All staff members were encouraged to vote on their favorite dish. The winner, fifth-grade teacher April Merando, was presented the Golden Rolling Pin. April will keep her trophy for a year and then pass it on to next year’s winner.


RES holds school-wide spelling bee

Ripley Elementary School recently held its annual school wide spelling bee.

After individual winners were selected in homeroom classrooms, a grade level bee was conducted. Winners from the third, fourth and fifth grades combined will participate in the county-wide Spelling Bee.

Winners of the RES school-wide spelling bee include Lindsey Hendren, Katie Hubbard, Ambria Maxwell, Allison Northcott, Anthony Portis, and Michael Srackangast.


Time for Kids

Thank you, Bank Of Ripley!

Students in Dianna Jackson’s third-grade class at Ripley Elementary School says “thank you” to Bank of Ripley for providing Time for Kids through the Expanding Minds Mini-Grant Program. These publications will be used throughout the curriculum in their classroom this year during whole group and small group instruction.
